Below is an email i received form Change.org about a series of Trayvon martin themed gun targets that are now in production and are apparetnly seeling out in droves around southern areas of the United States.
“In the past couple of days, news sources have reported that the Hiller Armament Company of Virginia has been selling gun targets that look like Trayvon Martin, complete with a hoodie, Skittles, and iced tea.
It’s not just vile, it’s possibly illegal: Virginia law says that no one can profit off of the likeness of any person without his consent — even if that person has been killed. But as soon as reporters started asking questions, the Hiller Armament Company shut down its website and disconnected its phone.
Tahir Duckett lives in Virginia, and he wants Virginia’s Attorney General, Ken Cuccinelli, to investigate the Hiller Armament Company and punish them if they have broken the law.”
A an American who believes in freedom and the right to bare arms I am honestly disgusted by this target and the lack of respect that it shows on behalf of the not only the manufacturer but on the people who utilize these targets. Regardless of how you feel about the case a 17 year old boy is dead so to make a shooting target in his likeness is beyond reprehensible and disgusting and there are no words in the English language strong enough to express how much I loathe this target and this concept. Below is a link to the change.org petition if you would like to sign it and join the cause.
The Below Article was taken from WJLB derived from an article in the Detroit News about a A teacher who was fired from her job after helping her students with their idea of starting a fund raiser for Trayvon Martin.
“Teacher Brooke Harris called this morning to discuss her recent dismissal as an English teacher at Pontiac Academy for Excellence Middle School. The 2-time teacher of the year told us that she was never given a real reason to why she was fired, when she says she was just trying to help her students do something meaningful…
JUST LISTEN FOR YOURSELF:
A few dozen people gathered at a Detroit church to rally against the the firing of a teacher whose students wanted to organize a fundraiser for Trayvon Martin’s family.
Via Detroit News:
English teacher Brooke Harris, 26, said she’s confused by her March dismissal from Pontiac Academy for Excellence Middle School.
On Tuesday night, clergy, community activists and others gathered at King Solomon Missionary Baptist to voice their displeasure over the teen’s death, as well as Harris’ dismissal. Harris said the idea for a fundraiser resulted from showing her eighth-grade journalism and yearbook class coverage of the slaying, and then asking them to write a short opinion piece.
Once a month, the school allows students to pay $1 to wear street clothes instead of their uniform, so students proposed that March 28 — the final class day before spring break — could be a day all students pay $1 to wear a hoodie, which is what Martin, 17, was wearing when he was killed.
Harris said the principal approved the idea, but Superintendent Jacqueline Cassell did not. The superintendent met with Harris and gave her a two-day suspension. While suspended, Harris said she went to the school’s literacy fair to drop off prizes and act as a guardian for a student. Harris met with Cassell again and was given a two-week suspension.
“I asked her if she could please tell me what I did wrong to come to the first meeting,” Harris said. “After I asked that question twice, she never gave me an answer — then she fired me.”
On Tuesday, Harris said: “I didn’t tell the kids, ‘Let’s go and do it anyway.’ I was actually, literally, in the process of talking to my kids about what we could do instead when Cassell requested the meeting with me and told me that I needed to let it go.”
Cassell said she couldn’t discuss personnel matters, but that she wanted students to focus on learning, not activism.”I’m a child of the civil rights movement,” Cassell said. But “this is not the time in the school year” to distract students from academics. “In every situation, there are work rules,” she said. “When rules are violated, there are consequences.”
This is a picture taken from a cell phone in Allen Park MI. Apparently the story goes that someone managed to hack the city’s traffic computer system and posted this message early this morning. To he honest I really don’t have to many words to describe how disgusted I am that someone would bother going to such great lengths just show how truly ignorant and misguided they truly are. People now more than ever we need to bring justice to not only Tryavon Martin, but to any and all hate crimes and racial tragedies so that we can truly move forward as one nation under GOD.
As 313phresh puts the finishing touches on his upcoming project — he, along with fellow emcee TrueSpeech, are giving you this free track (Produced by dSoul) and brand new video called “Black America”. Enjoy!!!
March 26th, 2012 Detroit Marched Down to Hart plaza and rocked our Hoodies in support for Trayvon Martin and the fight for Justice. I hit the crowd and asked the people their take on the movement for justice and the fight for peace and equality in America, as well as what they hoped the rally and other similar movements around the country would achieve.
